What does a small vet do?
Pet owners have at least a glimpse of what veterinarians do in small animals. One-time visits and annual check-ups are among the most common reasons a pet needs to visit a vet. "Many of the appointments are healthy visits to animals that need vaccination, parasite control, annual blood tests and routine physical exams," says Dr. Kane.

However, many pet owners make unexpected trips to the vet when their friends are not happy. "This requires diagnostic care, talking to pets parents about signs and symptoms, and prescribing medications - often antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medications," explains Dr. Kane.

Outside the basics, you may not realize just how much young veterinarians are able to do that and what their huge services are. Mixing and sterilization surgeries are relatively routine, but there are many other procedures and treatment strategies. Small animal veterinarians are involved in cancer treatment, tumor removal, trauma surgery, and much more. "The usual day is very busy," says Dr. Diarra Blue, co-owner of the Seafire Animal Hospital.

"The normal day is very busy."

For veterinarians who are also business owners, the duties extend further. Dr. Blu explains that responsibilities include 'being a daily leader and employee motivator'.

Veterinarians in small animals clearly need to be prepared for anything, because they may see a very sick patient immediately happy and healthy. No day is the same. "Often times, the days are so atypical that they are categorized as exemplary," notes Dr Magnifico.
What skills do young vets need?
Veterinarians in small animals play a variety of roles, so they need a large skill set that they can take advantage of. Some of the most important qualities are manual dexterity, the ability to make decisions quickly, and great communication skills. The ability to communicate effectively is especially important because veterinarians spend a lot of time interacting with pet owners.

Dr. Blue notes that veterinarians need to pay special attention to how the information is transmitted. "You should be able to speak effectively and deliver veterinary medicines at an elementary level because not all people have the same knowledge," he explains.

"You should be able to effectively express and deliver veterinary medicines at an elementary level."

Other personality traits are also important. Veterinary medicine can be a challenging profession, and some people are more suitable for it than others.

"It takes a lot of success in this profession," says Dr Magnifico. "It takes sorrow, determination, and a permanent reflection of true self." She adds that it is necessary to monitor what made you want to be a veterinarian in the first place.
