Most people have mixed feelings about moving to a new apartment. The idea of something new is always nice, waking up to a different view outside the window in the morning, taking a different bus route, etc. But it’s also where the other part of the reality tends to sink in – everything around you is new and unfamiliar. You’re going to miss your next door neighbor of three years, the pizzeria at the end of the block, and at the very least you’re going to miss your old apartment.
Hopefully the process of moving should take your mind off these things. Moving can be a fun experience. But it also means a lot of work and stress coming your way. If this is your first time moving on your own, here are some tips that might help you out and make things a little easier for you.
1. Take what you want, leave what you don’t need behind
Check every stuff and furniture you have in your old apartment before going out to look for a new one. Are you going to read that Packers and Movers Ludhiana Charles Dickens book again? Do you need to bring with you all 20 plates and 30 coffee mugs? Do you really want that poster of Tom Cruise in your new bedroom?
Take what you want and leave behind what you don’t need. It will save you time and money in the long run.
2. Ask for old boxes and plastic bags from nearby grocery stores
Boxes and plastic bags used for packing cost money, and that’s money that could’ve otherwise gone for other, more important things. Visit nearby groceries and tell them you’re moving and if they could donate a few old boxes or plastic bags they’re planning to throw away.
3. Pick the right size of boxes and plastic bags
This might sound elementary, but it deserves mentioning nonetheless. If you’re moving out on your own, choose the kind of box that’s easy for one person to carry. No point in getting a box the size of a refrigerator unless you want to drag it all the way to your new apartment.
4. Wrap fragile items in towels, old newspaper
This includes dishes, picture frames, old toys, ceramics, knick knacks, etc. You never know what could happen on the road and you don’t want to find that out the hard way. You can also use bed sheets and clothing to wrap these items away safely.
5. Label your items as you pack them away in boxes
On another note, label the boxes as well – such as things for the living room, the bedroom, kitchen utensils, bathroom items, etc. This makes it much easier to unpack especially when you’re working on a limited time budget.
6. Get moving
Good luck on your road trip and on your new apartment!
The process of moving is a prelude to something new and exciting happening in your life. Don’t spoil it by getting stressed out. Follow these tips and you should be settling in your new apartment with all your things intact in no time.
